husband mark kelly, incredibly powerful as well particularly in the moment that he smacked down wayne lapierre. it really is almost stunning what he said right? the whole exchange with dick durbin about what is the point of background checks. dick durbin is like that's the point you moron. >> yeah, and the other important point that i think rebuts that is that we have had now the brady system up and running since the late '90s, and actually 1.5 million gun transactions have been blocked because of the system that is in place, which, again, is a very spotty system in terms of mental health records and states that don't really do a good job of keeping their criminal record but even with those handicaps it still works, and the notion that it just doesn't work -- this is one of the nra talking points. it's just fact rally false, and -- and again obviously, durbin's point that it's a deterrence to people to guy guns is also the obvious counter to that claim. but i come from a more rural part of connecticut, and obviously there are a lot of gun owners out here. backgrou

contest. >> let me ask you real quick, gabrielle giffords' husband, mark kelly, the astronaut, was here in "the situation room" yesterday and wolf spoke with him and asked him to speak directly to the camera, to the nra. listen to what he said. >> well, we've had many, many mass murders in this country. i mean, we've had a lot of them, you know, especially recently. what we saw in newtown, in colorado, and in tucson, this is unacceptable. i think people understand that when somebody does a mass shooting and they use a semi-automatic weapon, an assault rifle, twice as many people are hurt and injured. >> i want to get your response to that, but also in the context of, you were in the hearing room yesterday, when gabrielle giffords gave that very emotional opening statement. you heard her speak. so what do you say to her and her husband. they're both gun rights owners, they both support the second amendment, but they've also both faced this horrible tragedy and they want to see more stricter gun laws. >> well, i think the stricter gun laws sort of generically, is not the answer. but i wil

the full senate. congresswoman gabby giffords and her husband mark kelly are set to testify as is nra executive wayne lapierrre. he has prepared remarks were released yesterday. his group will continue to oppose any and all new gun laws and that would include an assault weapons ban and any requirement for a universal background check. congressman paul ryan also against an assault weapons ban and any restriction on high-capacity magazines. seems to be breaking with the nra on one point. in an interview with the "milwaukee journal sentinel," congressman ryan called the gun show loophole an obvious problem. the nra has denied it exists. ryan has indicated he is willing to bend on closing the loophole. we're back with more show after the break. stay with us. right have, about the "heavy hand of government" ... i want to have that conversation. let's talk about it. really? you're going to lay people off because now the government is going to help you fund your healthcare. really? i want to have those conversations, not to be confrontational, but to understand what the other side is say
